Japan Earthquake: FBI Warns Against Relief Donation Scams

That said, we were amazed at how many stories are out there about Japan earthquake scams, though none seem to exist yet. Turns out most press on the topic is about how avoid being scammed.
Okay, so now you know.
After last spring's Haiti quake there were plenty of scammers out there, so it's not a bad idea to be vigilant.
Here's one way to be safe. Use the recommendation posted by the Japanese Consulate-Genera in L.A. and donate to the Red Cross' relief fund.
