Maybe you want to give your house a quick sustainable makeover, or a little do-it-yourself green interior redecorating, or maybe you just need a new couch. There are alternatives out there — some are right under your nose. Here are a few local shops you can check out to give you a start.
Organic Interior Design is a more high-end furnishings store — a little like the Design Within Reach of green spaces, but it also comes with one Kelly La Plante. She’s the owner and main designer at the shop on Main Street in Venice and offers her expertise to clients who wish to redecorate their homes using healthy products, organic fabrics and sustainable materials. La Plante has spent three years of her young life searching for products that not only won’t make you sick but will actually make your home look and feel good. La Plante is no slouch — she even has a book, Pure Sustainable Beauty: Eco-friendly Design in the Homes of Actors, Artists and Entrepreneurs, coming out next spring. And Organic Interior Design is proud to tell you they recently created the first completely organic sofa. In the shop you can find organic cotton sheets, towels, mattresses and even soy candles. 1501 Main St., No. 101, Venice, (310) 581-6450 or www.organicinteriordesign.com.
If You think I’m Salvageable,?Come on, Baby, Let Me Know
The motto at Silver Lake Architectural Salvage is “We save the past to build your future.” Well said. It was founded in 2005 by “Dumpster diver” Bruce Baker, who grew tired of having to walk on top of tables and bookshelves to get around his massive collection of recovered knobs and doors and Spanish tiles. There was only one thing left to do: Start selling them. These days, Baker doesn't scavenge; people actually bring him things — things like pedestal sinks, molding, clawfoot tubs and doors recovered from demolished or renovated houses. Right now the salvage yard has two huge stained-glass windows and a door from Rod Stewart’s house. The Salvage is a great way to reuse and recycle instead of feeding a landfill. New stock arrives every day; you just never know what you’ll find. 1065 Manzanita St., Silver Lake,? (323) 667-2875.
