In A.G.'s race, two big names weigh in late [Update: Speier out]
Candidates for statewide office turned in their semi-annual fundraising numbers Monday. But perhaps the two biggest names in the attorney general's race didn't have to file because they weren't running at all last year.
Steve Cooley, the Republican district attorney of L.A. County, jumped into the race only a few weeks ago. And Congresswoman Jackie Speier, of San Mateo, is still mulling whether to jump in on the Democratic side.*
A look at the Democrats' campaign filings shows you why Speier might be giving this a serious look.
* Update, 3:22 p.m.: Speier announced today that she's not running.

Kamala Harris, the San Francisco District Attorney, has been considered the front-runner on the Democratic side. But her report shows she's about even with three other Democrats -- Rocky Delgadillo, Alberto Torrico and Ted Lieu -- in cash on hand. Harris holds $1.25 million, having raised more and spent more than her competition, next to $1.19 million for Delgadillo, $1.13 million for Torrico, and $1.02 million for Lieu.
For comparison's sake, consider that at the same point in his (failed) 2006 run for attorney general, Delgadillo had $2.4 million in the bank. Delgadillo raised $3.1 million in 2005, but only $1.4 million in 2009.
Meanwhile, Facebook executive Chris Kelly leads the current crop with a little over $2 million in the bank, thanks to a generous donation from himself, and Pedro Nava trails with just $339,000.
Aside from Cooley, the only Republican in the race is Sen. Tom Harman, who reports just $314,000 on hand.
