Los Angeles has no center, they say. That's not a real downtown, they say.

Take the haters to Broadway tomorrow night. Shut them up for good.

The second annual Night on Broadway event is L.A.'s biggest block party, and it happens from 5 to 11 p.m. Saturday between Third Street and Olympic Boulevard. It's all-ages. And it's free.

Broadway will be closed to vehicle traffic from Third to Seventh to make way for an estimated 50,000 people, according to the office of City Councilman Jose Huizar, who spearheaded the event to celebrate the eighth anniversary of his Bringing Back Broadway revitalization project.

Upcoming Events

Twenty-five acts, including hometown heroes Ozomatli, will perform on an outdoor stage and in seven historic theaters on Broadway. Acrobats, comedians and performance artists are part of the festivities.

There will be food trucks, a kids' zone, a silent-disco party, an LGBT zone, Two Bit Circus, Lucent Dossier Experience, a Los Angeles River virtual-reality "experience" and hundreds of art displays curated by Downtown Art Walk and other organizations. The visual, can't-miss feature of the night will be a five-story Ferris wheel.

Virtual-reality footage will even let visitors travel back in time on Broadway.

And that's just scratching the surface.

"There will be so much going on at Night on Broadway in the historic theaters and on the street that no two people will have the exact same experience," Huizar said. "This great street has been making quite a comeback and we want to share that with Angelenos from all over the City."

Lucky for organizers: An El Niño storm forecast for the weekend wasn't expected to come ashore until Sunday.
