Hannah Bartle, 21-Year-Old Arizona State University Grad, Dies in Day's Second Fatal Stall on 405 Freeway
In the second fatal crash of its kind in 24 hours, 21-year-old L.A. resident Hannah Bartle died when her 2004 Suzuki Aero came to a standstill on the 405 freeway at 11:10 p.m. last Friday.
Just the night before, at 11:45 p.m., 23-year-old Vanessa Fulladosa of Palmdale was killed when her vehicle -- which had stalled on the southbound 405 -- was rear-ended in the fast lane. Unlike in Fulladosa's accident, however, Bartle came to a stop for unknown reasons on the northbound side of the freeway, in the second lane from the left, and was hit by at least two other drivers. Friday night was also cursed by heavy rain, making for decreased visibility.
Hannah Bartle had just moved to Los Angeles from Arizona...
... where she grew up in Phoenix and attended Arizona State University. A January 10 article in the Ahwatukee Foothill News recognizes the Fall 2010 graduate for her outstanding academic achievements at ASU:
Arizona State University student Hannah Leigh Bartle of Ahwatukee was honored at the Dec. 16 ASU commencement ceremonies with the Moeur Award. The award is given only to the students graduating with a 4.0 grade-point average who completed the entirety of their coursework at ASU. Out of over 5,300 graduates, Bartle was one of 12 honored with this award. She graduated with a degree in English (Linguistics) from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Bartle's car was hit in Costa Mesa, where the northbound 405 approaches the Santa Ana River. The California Highway Patrol told City News Service that after the young woman "crashed somehow," her Suzuki "came to a stop" and was sideswiped by a Chevrolet Cavalier -- putting her in the position to be fatally hit by a 2003 Toyota FJ Cruiser.
The drivers of those two vehicles came away with only minor injuries. Bartle, however, was rushed to Fountain Valley Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at about 12:30 a.m.
According to her profile on Meetup.com, Bartle had "just moved to LA and I want to find a group to practice my Spanish with as well as to meet some new friends."
