Gabriela Cortez, Alleged Student-Sexing Spanish Teacher, Pleads Not Guilty
"Looking for love in all the wrong places..." You guys remember that 1980 Johnny Lee song, right? We'd like to nominate it as LAUSD's new anthem, in light of the avalanche of allegations of inappropriate contact between students and teachers that have emerged over the last few months.
Gabriela Cortez, the 42-year-old Spanish teacher charged with six felony counts of unlawful sexual intercourse, was arraigned in a downtown Los Angeles courthouse this morning. She plead not guilty to all charges.
Cortez was allegedly lookin' for love with at least two of her students at Roosevelt High School in Boyle Heights, the flagship of Mayor Anthony Villaraigosa's pet Partnership for L.A. Schools.
The Partnership focuses on turning around the lowest-performing schools in LAUSD. We'd like to take this opportunity to point out this incident only offers proof that the organization mission--to create schools where "students experience more personalized attention from teachers"--is being carried out dutifully.
Prosecutors say that between January 2009 and November 2010 Cortez had sex with two male students, ages 16 and 17 at the time, at her home in Montebello. The first victim reportedly came forward because he wanted to get the incidents "off his chest." That student's confession resulted in the discovery of a second victim, and detectives believe there are still more out there.
Today's events make Cortez a front-runner for inclusion in the next installment of the "Hottest Women on the Sex Offenders List"--pending conviction of course. In the meantime, we welcome your nominations of others to that list, as well as suggestions for LAUSD theme songs--Hot For Teacher? Don't Stand So Close to Me? When I Kissed The Teacher?
