Failing Upward, a True Hollywood Story
Among the many stupid things that Los Angeles Times editorial and opinion editor Michael Kinsley has done since his arrival there, the dumbest was writing (before, mercifully, spiking) an editorial finding amusement in the decapitation murder of a Hollywood screenwriter. Now Kinsley has managed to top even that episode of bad judgment with the hiring of Time magazines Joel Stein as entertainment columnist.
At issue is not even the 33-year-old writers talent, or lack thereof, though his résumé reads like a case study of someone failing upward. No, its that Stein, a scavenger of snark, may very well be the most conflict-riddled columnist working in show-biz journalism today, and thats saying a lot. This guy makes former Hollywood Reporter columnist George ("a plug for every freebie, a gush for every gig") Christy look Pulitzer Prize worthy.
How in the world could LAT editor John Carroll, who constantly scolds about journalism ethics, make a deal with the devil in such a lame and likely futile attempt to attract a younger demo? Carroll has famously said, "Dont be a piano player in a whorehouse." Yet, beginning in January, journalisms equivalent of the Chopin of Show Biz will be working at his newspaper. "After he decided to hire me, Kinsley told me that John Carroll was excited," Stein told L.A. Weekly in an interview.
Asked for comment, a Times spokesperson told L.A. Weekly, "We often run opinion pieces by people who are involved in the subjects they are writing about. Joel Stein is not an employee. He's writing a column about Hollywood, but that is based on his being deeply involved in it. So there's no secret about that." Given that reasoning, what the Times should have done was hire someone really experienced in the entertainment business, not this unsuccessful wannabe.

Steins past and present forays into entertainment are not mentioned in either the New York Observer puff piece announcing his LAT hiring or his official Time online biography. To be fair, Stein has not kept his Industry escapades secret; hes used them as fodder for columns. But rarely do employers actually read all of an applicants clips.
If they had, theyd know that Stein came to Hollywood to do a story for Time about Comedy Centrals The Man Show and, "From my memory, or maybe its my ego, they were thinking of offering me a job," Stein himself recalls. "I was thinking of taking it, but I didnt want to move to L.A. for it or quit my job for it." So Stein became a contributor to the series, "faxing them stuff" from his apartment. For those keeping score, Comedy Central is owned by Comedy Partners, a wholly owned division of MTV Networks, which in turn is owned by Viacom, one of the biggest of Big Media.
Stein also turned his life into 13 episodes of an animated show, this time for Viacom subsidiary VH1. Steins character was voiced by actor Jon Cryer. "They spent $4 million, and the shows never aired," Stein rues. Also for VH1, Stein became a regular commentator on those I Love the 70s and I Love the 80s specials. (Hes the wire-rim-wearing, flop-haired smirker who looks amused by what hes telling the camera even if the rest of us arent.) For Time Warners HBO, Stein does the short-segment filler Phoning It In, during which he deadpans interviews with celebrities from a phone booth.
But last year, Stein got close to grabbing Hollywoods gold ring: Warner Bros. television developed a series based on his life as a smart-aleck guy working for a national magazine. This time, Stein was played by Hanks. No, not AAA-list star Tom Hanks, but son, Colin. Stein, who had a lot of vacation time banked, spent weeks upon weeks in L.A. on the project. The idea made it into ABCs development slate and then into a pilot, until it was ditched just three days before the network had to announce its fall schedule.
Now L.A. Weekly has learned that Stein just clinched a blind script deal with Fox Television Studios. Says Stein: "Ill create something. Theyll make and sell it to the networks." Stein already has a favorite alphabet. "ABC, I like them."
So this means that, given his past TV sales, and Big Medias consolidation, Stein is in some way compromised at every major Hollywood studio except Sony. And with ICM repping him for speeches and Endeavor making his TV deals, Stein is also compromised at two of the top five talent agencies.
Stein is unabashed about seeing his new column as a steppingstone to full-time employment by Hollywood. "Im going to continue to try to get jobs in the entertainment business. Long term, yeah, Id like to write for TV. It sounds like fun."
He even defends the obvious conflict of interest. "If youre upfront and superhonest about it, it only makes things more interesting and true. I have much better contacts, and I know much more than before. People who write about the business should be in it for a week. I think I gain more than I lose." And about the argument that anybody who works for Hollywood gets owned by Hollywood, he acknowledges, "Its weird to cover the Industry and get paid by them at the same time. But my love for Rupert Murdoch is deep and sincere, anyway. It has nothing to do with cash."
Is he being facetious? "Probably. I actually have a long, proud history of insulting people who give me money."
However, Hollywood takes a dim view of being made fun of and sees it more like being harpooned, not lampooned. And Hollywood has a habit of biting back.
Stein notes that, while waiting to find out if ABC was going to make his pilot, "Inadvertently, in a back-page column in Time about baseball, I made an incredibly cruel and pointless joke about Mike [sic] Eisner, and somebody who was working on my show pulled me aside and said, You know, Mike Eisner decides whether our show gets on the air. And I said, No, he doesnt. I think hes a little busy.
"Apparently, Im wrong. Thats what he does. I got scared at that moment."
When the show wasnt picked up, Stein didnt think his faux pas was the reason. "There was no repercussion at all. People like seeing their name in print." Oh, really?
"I was writing a column about Frenchy [being] expelled from American Idol, when I wrote something that was really cruel about [soon-to-be-fired Fox TV boss] Sandy Grushow by name. Someone said, Thats not smart. But I think you can insult anyone because theyll be gone in a year."
Adding injury to insult, LAT sources tell L.A. Weekly that Kinsley broke with newspaper etiquette and hired Stein without so much as a shoutout to Calendar. Too bad. Because then Kinsley would have discovered what Stein almost proudly told me: that both the LAT and the NYT had previously rejected him as a job candidate.
What happened was that, after stints as a researcher-writer for Martha Stewart Livings TV show ("I was fired," Stein says) and Time Out New Yorks sports editor and columnist ("I was almost fired," he adds), Stein in 1997 was hired by Times then top editor, Walter Isaacson, as a writer-reporter. "People were pissed when I got to Time. They thought I was this punk-nosed snot [sic] who was ruining their mag," Stein recalls.
Assigned first to the People page, Stein graduated to question-and-answer interviews, then features, and then alternated columns with Calvin Trillin. After 9/11, Time dropped the column but kept Stein on staff. Still on Times payroll but underemployed, was hired by sister publication Entertainment Weekly as an entertainment columnist. The job lasted only eight months. "It was like any breakup," he recalls. "They gave me the Its us, not you line. They were awfully nice about it, considering they fired me."
Enter Kinsley. It took Stein six months to close the op-ed/opinion columnist deal. "I hadnt had much luck with the Los Angeles Times before that. Back when my E.W. column first got canceled, I talked to [features czar John] Montorio. I talked to The New York Times. But no traction. I had a great track record of people wanting to have discussions with me, and an awful track record of people wanting to hire me."
Much to Steins embarrassment, Kinsley admitted to The New York Observer he "had problems" with Steins column and didnt want to "whore after youth" by hiring him. Counters Stein: "Its not that he didnt like my writing. I call it a generational difference of opinion. I think people under a certain age like the honesty of the solipsism, and people over a certain age think its obnoxious." In truth, the two are Tweedledum and Tweedledee in terms of their smug and detached style of writing.
Stein moves to L.A. in January when hes finished teaching a class at Princeton. Hes leaving a cushy staff job hell continue with Time as a contributor for the uncertain future of a freelance columnist. He says he doesnt even have an LAT contract.
"Yes, it is crazy, its not something a smart person would do," Stein acknowledges. "Only someone with a giant, giant ego would do this. Id be disappointed if I didnt let myself find out if Im going to be great at this. Youd think having my columns canceled by most big publications would tell me Im not good."
