DUI Checkpoint Tonight in Silver Lake; Drunk Patrol in Pasadena
Brian Erzen / LA Weekly
Police have been stretched thin staffing up for Trayvon Martin protests and threats of flash mobs throughout the city.
But that doesn't mean cops won't be looking for drunk drivers on another warm, summer weekend. There's no free pass here. There is, however, the power of information. We have the 411 on where the police will be tonight:
-There will be an LAPD DUI checkpoint from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Fountain and Myra avenues in Silver Lake.

-In Pasadena, cops will deploy a "DUI saturation patrol" from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. citywide. That means extra officers will be on the streets looking for drunk drivers. The department says that if they have an inkling you've been drinking and driving, its cops will have a "zero-tolerance" stance.

Why do we tell you this stuff (you almost always ask)? Police believe warning you about where they'll be might deter folks from getting behind the wheel after downing one too many.
The deterrent effect of sobriety checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes. Research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough.
Now you know.
