Another day, another L.A.-area endorsement for Attorney General Kamala Harris.

This time it's L.A. District Attorney Jackie Lacey who is backing Harris for Senate. That's one more shot across the bow of former L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who is still deciding whether to enter the race.

On Monday, L.A. City Council President Herb Wesson also endorsed Harris. While neither Lacey nor Wesson are exceptionally well known, their endorsements signal that Harris would have strong support in L.A.'s African-American community in a showdown with Villaraigosa.

Lacey's endorsement is not a big surprise on a personal level. Harris endorsed Lacey's campaign for district attorney in 2012, while Villaraigosa backed Carmen Trutanich.

"As Attorney General, Kamala Harris has been an effective and aggressive chief law enforcement officer for the state, and has been a true parter with local law enforcement throughout California," Lacey said in a statement. "I am proud to support her for the United States Senate to ensure that our state’s public safety leaders and all Californians have a voice in the nation’s capital.”

In 2010, Harris narrowly defeated Lacey's boss and mentor, D.A. Steve Cooley, in the race for attorney general.

Harris remains the only major candidate in the field to replace retiring Sen. Barbara Boxer in 2016.
