California's Population Surpassed 38 Million in 2013
California, the most populous state in the nation, officially crossed the 38 million mark in 2013, the U.S. Census Bureau said this week.
The bureau estimates that the Golden State's population swelled to more than 38 million around July 1 of this year. On July 1, 2012, we had 37,999,878 people, according to the Census:
We gained more than 332,000 residents from July 2012 to July 2013, the Census estimates. The grand total, it says, is 38,332,521.

Those figures jibe with what the state Department of Finance said earlier this month -- that we grew by 332,000 or so people. The state pegs our population at 38.2 million, a slighter smaller number than what the feds came up with.
The state finance folks last month also revealed that the nation's most populous county, Los Angeles, surpassed the 10 million population mark, a first, in 2013.
The Census Bureau says that as of Jan. 1 the United States population will be 317,297,938 -- that's 2,218,622 more than on the last New Year's day.
We're getting old and we're growing more slowly, Census officials say. Although officials project there will be one birth every eight seconds in America, there will also be one death every 12 seconds.
The global population increased 1.1 percent from New Year's Day to New Year's Day, the Census says.
That's a gain of more than 77 million for a total global population of 7,137,577,750. (That's billion.)
India is baby maker numero uno, followed by China, Nigeria, Pakistan and Ethiopia. India added more than 15 million people to its population, which is L.A. County and a half.
Worldwide, Census officials project, there will be about four births and two deaths every second in 2014.
