A body was found in a Manhattan Beach park, not far from the city's eponymous middle school.
The discovery was a shocker for residents of the upscale town. News footage showed a ball of sheets or blankets wrapped around what authorities say were the remains. The find was made by city workers:
The L.A. County Sheriff's Department says its detectives were called to Polliwog Park shortly after the 3:30 p.m. discovery yesterday.

According to a sheriff's statement:
Detectives have learned that city workers were moving a dirt pile when a suspiciously wrapped object appeared. They summoned Manhattan Beach Police Department officers, who determined the object to be a human body.
Police called sheriff's homicide investigators, who apparently help out with murder cases. Those detectives weren't saying much more about the case, noting that the age and gender of the victim would be determined by the county coroner's office.
Just by the looks of the scene, it appears the body was dumped there. But we won't know the details just yet.
