Billionaire Couple Robbed While In L.A. For Oscars
The Four Seasons.
A Florida sugar baron who was in Los Angeles last week for Oscar-related festivities said he and his wife were robbed -- reports stated perhaps "millions" worth of jewels were taken -- at the Four Seasons hotel near Beverly Hills.
The robbery of Jose "Pepe" Fanjul and wife Emilia reportedly happened Friday at the hotel at 300 S. Doheny Dr. Police said a man dressed in a tuxedo -- to appear as one of the hotel's workers -- carried out the crime. A source told the New York Post the robber took the woman's jewels, thought to be worth millions.
"They were riding up in the elevator when a man in a blue uniform with 'hotel' written on his shirt started to talk Spanish to Pepe (inset)," an anonymous source told the Post. "They both got off on the same floor, and Pepe and his wife went into their suite. They then heard a knock on the door. It was the man in the elevator, who said, 'I am here to fix your air conditioner.' They let him in, and he took valuables including Emilia's jewels -- thought to be worth millions -- and fled."
Los Angeles police believe the suspect, described as a man in his mid-30s with slicked-back black hair, could be the same well-dressed thief who used credentials to gain access to a Staples Center locker room and flee with $22,000 in cash and valuables from members of an Israeli basketball team on Oct. 22. The team was in town to play an exhibition game against the Clippers.
