Alleged Uber Kidnapper Goes Free

An Uber driver who police say kidnapped a drunk woman and took her to a seedy motel walked out of jail yesterday and won't be facing any charges, at least for now.
The L.A. County District Attorney's office declined to file a case despite a recommendation by the Los Angeles Police Department that it do so. The office says one of its investigators was unable to track down the victim to get her story on the record.
The woman was not returning phone calls, the office said, and ...
... she apparently gave cops a false address.
That would certainly hinder any potential prosecution of a man, 32-year-old Frederick Dencer of Encino, who LAPD says picked up the woman outside West Hollywood club Greystone Manor and took her to a motel in Panorama City without her consent early Monday.
Lt. Paul Vernon told us the victim said she had been fondled outside her clothing by the suspect. Police believe the man intended to have sex with the woman, he said.
She was so drunk, police said, that she was unable to say where she lived. When she woke up in a strange room Monday, she walked to a nearby 7-Eleven and phoned authorities, cops said. She was able to help officers find the motel, and the driver was found inside a room asleep, Vernon said.
The night before, a valet at the club asked the Uber driver, who was nearby, if he could take the woman home because of her inebriated condition, police said.
The woman was an Uber client, but the driver did not log her in as a fare, cops said.
Uber said that while "it's certainly unclear that this is an Uber-related incident, as the driver in question was not logged in, connected to or operating on the platform at the time," it has suspended the suspect and will look into the matter.
Dencer was released at 12:01 p.m. yesterday, according to L.A. County Sheriff's Department's inmate data. LAPD had locked him up in lieu of $1 million bail.
The department recommended a charge of suspicion of kidnapping with intent to commit sexual assault.
