Aaron Shannon Jr., L.A. Homicide No. 214: Five-Year-Old Boy In Spiderman Costume Shot In South L.A. Backyard On Halloween
Update: Two suspects have been arrested for the murder. Known gang members Marcus Denson, 18, and Leonard Hall Jr., 21, are each being held in lieu of $1 million bail.
A Black boy fatally shot at about 2 p.m. on Halloween day has been identified as five-year-old Aaron Shannon, Jr.
The boy was showing his Spiderman costume to his father, uncle and grandfather in his backyard on the 1000 block of East 84th Street -- an active gang area in South L.A. -- when two Crips crossed Central Avenue in search of Bloods to target, according to the Associated Press.
When the gang members began to fire shots into the backyard, both Shannon's grandfather and uncle were grazed by the bullets. The boy, however, was hit full-on in the back of the head, said officers at the LAPD's 77th Street Station.
Shannon was pronounced dead at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center on Monday night.
By Tuesday, the L.A. City Council had offered a reward of up to $75,000 to anyone who could provide information about the suspects. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors then offered its own $25,000 reward on Wednesday.
"On a day when little kids look forward to dressing up and going out and knocking door-to-door and going to parties to get candy and have some fun, this child was shot in the head by two people," City Councilman Jan Perry, in charge of Shannon's district, said when she proposed the reward. "It is a horrible, heinous thing."
At a press conference following the arrest of the two suspects, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa also expressed his sorrow.
"I think we all know this was an outrageous murder of an innocent child," he said. "The loss for the family is an unspeakable loss that none of us would want to endure.''
