99 Cent Store Murder Suspect Eric Atkinson Could Face Death
Prosecutors today charged a reputed gang member with the murder of Happy Bargain 99 Cents store clerk Martha Sanchez.
Cops say they caught the guy on security video (some of which on the the next page), and now that suspect, Eric William Atkinson, could face the death penalty, according to the L.A. County District Attorney's office.
The 31-year-old was charged today with capital murder. [Added: D.A.'s spokeswoman Jane Robison tells us the case involves suspicion of murder with the special circumstance of a killing during the commission of a robbery].
Authorities say he went to the Happy Bargain 99 Cents store in the 7400 block of South Broadway about 8:50 p.m. on Sept. 17 and opened fire multiple times on store worker Sanchez.

The LAPD says the 39-year-old left behind a husband and was a mother of five children ages 3 to 19.
Cops say the whole thing, with robbery as the alleged motive, was captured on video.
Atkinson was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday. Prosecutors are asking for no bail.
He could face the death penalty, but the D.A.'s office stated today that it will wait to determine if it will pursue this as a capital case.
