You may not have noticed, but there is a new and interesting trend wherein women actually play music! In bands! With instruments and everything! Pretty crazy right? I know. I have no clue where they got the idea that they should do that instead of just watching guys make music. Particularly since some of the guys that make music are super hot and fun to watch.
Anyway, some women these days make amazing music, and some of them manage to do it so well that people focus on the music instead of how hot they are. Like these women! Who are they? Where can you find this mysterious breed of human that is a) female bodied, b) rockin' and c) hot? Right here! In Los Angeles--some of them are pictured here, just hanging out, being hot! And why write about music if not to evaluate the extent to which musicians--particularly female musicians-- live up to our increasingly unrealistic standards of beauty? Why not, indeed!
Big Whup. Naked.
5. Big Whup
Big Whup is art rock with quirky, indie appeal and catchy hooks. They have a violin player, and an amazing singer/keyboard player, and oh yeah this band picture is of them. Naked. And one of them is holding a stuffed pink pig.
Piper. Petting her pet rabbit.
4. Puro Instinct (née Pearl Harbor)
Los Angeles' Puro Instinct is the brainchild of sisters Piper and Skylar Kaplan, and includes supporting members identified solely as Brooke, Cody, Jessica, and Mike. The band has a laid-back, dreamy, ambient sound that reminds you of AM radio pop played on a summer day. They will soon release a 7" called "Stilyagi", featuring Ariel Pink; after that, keep your eyes peeled for their Mexican Summer full-length, "Headbangers in Ecstacy". Pictured above is lead singer Piper, petting her bunny.
Wet and Reckless
3. Wet and Reckless
Girl group Wet and Reckless is kind of nuts (in a hot way), and make power-pop influenced electro-acoustic crazyness as a result. Their September Silverlake Lounge residency was off the hook and they got rave reviews from their Silverlake Jubilee performance this summer.
Dum Dum Girls
2. Dum Dum Girls
Dum Dum Girls. They are an enigma, wrapped in a riddle, wrapped in really cool clothes. OK so they are all not from Los Angeles but enough are, and they rock hard enough and come around often enough that we figured they'd count.
Happy Hollows' Sarah Negahdari
1. Happy Hollows
Sarah Negahdari from the Happy Hollows is an insanely talented guitarist, mixing 90s-era alternative with modern rock. The band's debut full-length got some props from Pitchfork and after a string of sold-out shows, they played an insane gig at SXSW 2010 that further boosted their public profile.
