Top 10 Popstar Clothing Lines that Put Madonna and Lourdes' New "Material Girl" to Shame!

In this week's Nightranger column, we cover last week's Macy's Passport "Glamorama" event at the Orpheum Theatre downtown. The event was scaled back from years past live music-wise (Macy Gray and Eric Hutchinson performed short sets in between the runway looks) but the production was still top-notch.

Glamorama fashion included Marc by Marc Jacobs, Just Cavalli, and Tommy Hilfiger, but Material Girl, the 80's-inspired junior line by Madonna and daughter Lourdes got the biggest reaction. (This clip is from blogger/social media diva Stacy Soleil, one of the tastemakers we hung out with as part of a brand ambassador posse put together by our pal Heidi Richman and Wente Vineyards).

As seen above, the presentation was fun, straight out of a choreographed awards show. But the actual clothes? We weren't impressed. This one mixes the ugliest '80s trends in a cheap-looking, pubescent, and mismatched way. It's obviously young and priced as such, but too sexy for the age-bracket it's targeting. Their spokegirl is Gossip Girl actress/rocker Taylor Momsen, who's known for wearing garters and lucite stripper heels on stage with her band The Pretty Reckless. Nuff said.

The line got us thinking... Madge isn't the first artist to put her name behind a clothing line. But which has been most wearable/memorable? And which actually captures the persona of the musician involved? Below, our list.

Did we miss any? Let us know and and place your bets on who might be next to jump on the rock-frock bandwagon. Our guesses: Lady Gaga (skirt-steak skirts) Justin Bieber (sideways-only baseball caps) or Katy Perry (edible bras and panties).

Top 10 Popstar Clothing Lines that Put Madonna and Lourdes' New "Material Girl" to Shame!

10. Travis Barker- Famous Stars & Straps- Hip-hop meets punk rock, playa stylee.

(Hot tip: Click the link for info on an event Barker's doing with The Cool Kids next week.)

9. Good Charlotte- DCMA- Same basic aesthetic as above, but not as cool.

8. Justin Timberlake- William Rast- Still bringing sexy backsides to denim.

7. Miley Cyrus at Walmart. The clothes are blah, but the accessories are toxic (not a Britney reference).

6. Jessica Simpson's fashion empire, Paris Hilton's shoes, Lindsay Lohan's leggings. Yes, we use the term "music artist" loosely here.

5. Jennifer Lopez- Sweet Face- Lopez couldn't save face and shut down her line last year. "JLO" products (part of the Tommy Hilfiger holdings) still pop up at the mall, though.

4. Tie: P Diddy's Sean John vs. Jay-Z's Rocawear. Both worn baggy and preferably with bling.

3. Beyonce -House of Dereon-This bootylicious line should really be called House of Derrier.

2. Bono -Edun. Organic, utilitarian styles you'd expect. But where's the sunglass line?

and the number one pop-star clothing line is...

1. Gwen Stefani- LAMB/Harajuku Lovers. Gwen's style in No Doubt and as a solo artist is accessible and edgy at the same time. It's trendy, but unlike Material Girl, people the singer's own age can actually wear it and not look bananas... unless they want to.
