Tonight: The New Pornographers, Tool, Summer Darling, Mississippi Man, the Outline
The New Pornographers
For a band with four singers at least that many solo projects, the New Pornographers' fifth album Together sounds pretty ... well, together.
The Canadian collective is a supergroup in almost every sense of the word, and their power-pop adventuring has never felt fresher that on the new album, which featuring main man A.C. Newman calling upon a cadre of collaborators that includes Neko Case, Kathryn Calder, Dan Bejar, Okkervil River's Will Sheff, Beirut's Zach Condon, Annie Clark (St. Vincent) and the Dap-Kings.
The presence of the original lineup -- Newman, Case, Calder, Blaine Thurier, John Collins, Todd Fancey and Kurt Dahle -- has brought the band's audiophile following out in droves on their current tour, an eclectic affair that features the Dodos and Imaad Wasif as supporting acts.
Tonight's opener of a two-night stand at the Music Box will bring out its share of Case admirers, to be sure -- little birdies up the coast tell us to sit still for her leads on "My Shepherd" and "Go Places" -- but it's the whole New Pornographers package of hooks, beats and harmonies that will keep things crisp.
Elsewhere: If we had to guess, the secret guest at this week's installment of the RSVP-only It's a School Night at Bardot is a certain nice Irish folk duo we told you about last week. (Tom Freund and friends will play too.) .... It's Night 2 of Tool at the Nokia Theatre ... And the Riverwinds play the Viper Room.
Also: Your budget-pleasing (as in, free) residencies in the Silver Lake/Echo Park environs continue, with the plenty of variety -- Mississippi Man at the Echo (with Buddy supporting; the Outline at the Bootleg Theater (with Grouplove); Summer Darling at Spaceland ; and Yellow Red Sparks at the Silverlake Lounge (with the Fling). ... And: Katelyn Epperly at the Mint; Jenni Alpert at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach; Rocket at the Dragonfly.
