Tonight: Marina & the Diamonds, Steel Train, Fol Chen, Jack Tempchin, the Delta Mirror
"If you were a color, what color what you be?" That inane conversation-starter has serious meaning for Welsh songstress Marina Diamandis.
Diamandis, the brains and beauty behind Marina & the Diamonds (the precious gems, in this case, referring to her fans), has a condition known as synesthesia that allows her to "see" entities like musical notes, days of the week and even people as colors.
The nuggets on her debut album "The Family Jewels" (naturally) won't leaving you feeling as blue as, say, Katy Perry, but their spry, good-natured eccentricity and themes of empowerment and self-realization can be as endearing as Kate Nash or Florence & the Machine, and Diamandis is every bit as good in fashion shoots.
Marina & the Diamonds play a sold-out show tonight at the Troubadour, with Jasmine Ash supporting.
Elsewhere: Avant-garde indie-poppers Fol Chen celebrate the release of their sophomore album, "Part II: The New December" at the Echo, with Baths (whose own debut "Cerulean" is also out today) playing the late set. ... Steel Train, the New Jersey pop-rock outfit who played an afternoon main-stage slot at Coachella in April, play El Rey behind last week's release of their third album (get there early to catch locals Shadow Shadow Shade). ... And Jack Tempchin, the songwriter behind "Peaceful Easy Feeling" and other Eagles hits, holds forth at the Mint.
Also: The Delta Mirror at Spaceland; the Night at the Silverlake Lounge; Falling Still and Cityzen free at the Viper Room; Moses Campbell at Synchronicity Space; and "A Glorious Celebration" (with post-holiday fireworks) at the Hollywood Bowl.
