Tonight in NYC: Sebastian Meissner and Kwartludium Adapt SST Records Output
This struck us as a potentially fascinating exercise that we would love to see tonight --except it's in New York. German electronic producer Sebastian Meissner (aka Klimek) is teaming up with Polish avant-classical group Kwartludium to present "Solid State Transmitters," an homage to great LA label SST Records.
The performance, part of the Unsound Festival, will feature the ensemble performing adaptations of classic music from the label's 1980s output. No word on what particular pieces they'll perform, but they've got a lot of options; among other artists appearing on SST in the 1980s are: Black Flag, the Minutemen, Hüsker Dü, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, Bad Brains, The Meat Puppets, Sonic Youth, and Dinosaur Jr.
After the jump, a beautiful Klimek piece that sounds absolutely nothing like anything SST ever put out, along with details on the performance and a few suggestions of great SST tracks to adapt.
Here's the deal, according to the Unsound website:
Via this collaboration, Meissner has created a new project, an homage to the artists releasing on California's SST records, often described as the most influential and popular underground indie label of the Eighties. The label sought to expand beyond the limitations of the hardcore genre, releasing key albums that were essential in the development of American alternative rock, including releases by Black Flag, the Minutemen, Hüsker Dü, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, Bad Brains, The Meat Puppets, Sonic Youth, and Dinosaur Jr. P.O.Box 1, Lawndale will pay tribute to these artists, as well as a period of time when musical diversity, discovery and creation of new genres had a higher priority than profit. Essential and influential songs from the SST catalogue will be reinterpreted in a surprising, often strikingly beautiful manner, to reveal the persisting uniqueness and relevance of this era.
Also appearing at Unsound, which is the Stateside debut of the Polish experimental techno festival, are Morgan Geist, Jan Janelik, Pole, Newworldaquarium, Moritz von Oswald, Vladislav Delay, Legowelt and many many others. (Whether any techno headz at this festival will recognize any of the SST punk jamz is to be determined).
Black Flag, "Slip It In"
Minutemen, "Little Man with a Gun in His Hand"
Husker Du, "Makes No Sense at All"
Dinosaur Jr., "The Wagon"
Sonic Youth, "Shadow of a Doubt"
Leaving Trains, "Temporal Sludge"
