Tonight: Foals, Mumford & Sons, John Legend and the Roots, Griffin House, Jason Derulo, Evan Voytas, Radars to the Sky
Foals' arty fusion of indie-rock and dance music took two albums to coalesce, but it did on Total Life Forever, which came out in May on Sub Pop.
The album earned the Oxford, U.K., quintet a nomination for Britain's Mercury Prize. What it's earning them on their current 22-date tour of the U.S. is a passel of sweaty fans who love Foals' hackles-raising guitars and body-shaking rhythms. Their live sets have included a healthy dose of songs from their debut Antidotes, plenty of spaced-out excursions and a bit of crowd-surfing by frontman Yannis Philippakis.
All that coalesces tonight at the sold-out El Rey Theatre.
Elsewhere: Another Mercury Prize nominee, Mumford & Sons, return to L.A. just four months after a sold-out show at the Music Box to play the Palladium. ... At the Grammy Museum, John Legend and the Roots discuss their new collaboration Wake Up! and perform some songs from the album. ... And fresh from his eye-popping Wiltern show on Sunday night, Jonsi plays the Fox Theater in Pomona.
Also: Residencies continue for Evan Voytas (at the Echo, with the Sweet Hurt, Halloween Swim Team and Pizza!); Radars to the Sky (at Spaceland, with Wait. Think. Fast. and One Trick Pony); and Wet & Reckless (at the Silverlake Lounge, with Twilight Sleep and Manhattan Murder Mystery). ... And: Jason Derulo at the House of Blues; the French Horn Rebellion and Mia Doi Todd at It's a School Night at Bardot; Griffin House at the Troubadour; Phil Alvin at the Redwood Bar; Blood Red Shoes and Sky Larkin at the Bootleg; Day Above Ground at the Viper Room; Wacka Flocka Flame at the Roxy; Tamar Kaprelian and Walking in Space at the Hotel Cafe; and Gaelic Storm at Pepperdine University.
