Tonight: First Aid Kit, Belle & Sebastian, Jenny & Johnny, Angus & Julia Stone, Van Morrison, Slash
There are harmonies, and there are harmonies. The twining vocals of teenage sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg seem sent from somewhere in the clouds.
The young Swedes, who make music as First Aid Kit, have swept American audiences off their feet since they became one of the wunderkinds of South by Southwest last spring. Mentored early on by Karin Dreijer Andersson (Fever Ray, the Knife), the siblings released their debut album "The Big Black and the Blue" this year -- it's an album of sparse arrangements and au courant songwriting that makes you wonder: What is it about the way non-Americans do Americana?
Their current tour (with L.A.-via Nashville-via L.A. folk singer Ferraby Lionheart) brings the Söderbergs to the Echo tonight en route to the Austin City Limits festival, where, as they showed in March, they have the local dialect down.
Elsewhere: Belle & Sebastian plays a sold-out show at Hollywood Forever Cemetery that begins with a screening of the movie "Trainspotting" at 7:15. ... Jenny & Johnny -- that's Jenny Lewis and Johnathan Rice -- headline the Troubadour, supported by Farmer Dave Scher and Whispertown. ... And Australian folkies Angus & Julia Stone kick off a U.S. tour with a headlining date at the El Rey Theatre.
Also: Van Morrison at the Greek; Talvin Singh and Ariana Delawari at the Echoplex; Slash at the House of Blues; Hexham Heads and Nightmare Air at Spaceland; Repeater and Box Violet the Silverlake Lounge; Anna Nalick and Emily Ebert at the Hotel Cafe; Black Cherry and New Kingdom at the Roxy; London to Tokyo and Many of Odd Nature at the Viper Room; Child Abuse and Bipolar Bear at the Smell; Roseanne Cash at the Grammy Museum; Hypnogaja at the Mint; and Alain Johannes' 7 p.m. in-store at Amoeba.
