Tonight at Family: Gary Panter, Who True Punkers Know as Illustrator for Slash Magazine

If you're looking for something cool to do after the BBQs or naps or hangovers or bender-continuations or whatever it is you're doing this afternoon, think about heading to Family bookstore on Fairfax, where artist Gary Panter will be playing music, signing books, hanging out, doing whatever it is that fancy-pants illustrators/art designer/comix legends do on a Memorial Day.

Panter made his mark in the LA music world in the late seventies where his iconic images of intense punkers in Slash magazine helped cement an aesthetic onto the musical movement. He was published in the early issues of legendary comic annual Raw magazine, from there landed a gig as art director for Pee Wee's Playhouse, where he helped design the glorious sets that transformed a kids show into a classic. And that's to say nothing of his shockingly great Jimbo comic.

Yeah, so if that's not enough for you, after the signing, Panter was asked to pick a film to show down the street Cinefamily at the Silent Movie Theatre, and he opted for Fellini's Satyricon. That screens at 8 p.m.
