Tonight: Also I Like to Rock with Admiral Radley, Au Revoir Simone, Benji Hughes
The title track to Admiral Radley's debut album is a paean to the Golden State as only Jason Lytle could pen it.
"I Heart California" -- the first song from the project featuring Lytle and his old Grandaddy bandmate Aaron Burtch and Earlimart principals Aaron Espinoza and Ariana Murray -- sketches out a place of wild juxtapositions, where it's far easier to find yourself bemused than amused.
The quartet's new karaoke-style video for the song plays to the former, especially its big, sighing chorus punctuated by the mock-Schwarzenegger response, "I love California." Which is actually Murray, her voice put through Lytle's effects wringer.
"I could have only written these lyrics if I knew these guys could make them hilarious," Lytle says. "Part of that was to get the quietest girl singer and have her emulate the Arnold Schwarzenegger voice. Ariana sounds like Arnold singing through an Austrian megaphone."
The band's debut album is out now digitally, with physical copies due Tuesday. Ad Rad kicks off a tour supporting it with a free show at tonight's Week 2 of the Also I Like to Rock series at the Hammer Museum. Local spazz-rock trio the Happy Hollows support.

Elsewhere: Tonight's Echoplex show could be the last we'll see of dream-pop trio Au Revoir Simone for a while -- Heather D'Angelo revealed in a recent interview that the band will go on "a little hiatus" because she is returning to school and singer-keyboardist Annie Hart is five months pregnant. ... Hirsute singer-songwriter Benji Hughes is doing a Benji-and-friends residency at Largo. ... And Sugarland, supported by Michelle Branch and Will Hoge, brings its Grammy-wining country to the Greek Theatre.
