Tim & Eric Offer Sneak Peek of Awesome Show Season Five and Dr. Steve Brule Spinoff

Since Comic-Con, the buzz amongst fans of comedy team Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim has been that not only will their Adult Swim program Awesome Show, Great Job! return for a fifth season ("Season Cinco," says Wareheim, playing off the popularity of the fictional corporation that appears in the show), but John C. Reilly would be getting a spinoff for his character Dr. Steve Brule. While the new season of Awesome Show is set to begin on February 28, we haven't heard a firm date for Check It Out with Dr. Steve Brule yet. Still, fans were treated to a sneak peek of both Tuesday night at the Silent Movie Theater.

For Your Haiti!, the team's benefit screening for earthquake relief in Haiti, was, we were informed, the quickest sell-out in the history of the theater. In fact, tickets went so fast that a second Tuesday night screening was added. The small venue was packed tight with people who were clearly there to laugh through the bizarre escapades of Heidecker, Wareheim, Reilly and friends and they weren't disappointed.

Heidecker and Wareheim screened two episodes of Awesome Show. Based on those, we think it's safe to say that Season Cinco might be the duo's runaway hit. The production seems a little more slick than previous seasons and the stories linking together the sketches are more cohesive than in the past. As you might have guessed, there will be a host of celebrity guests (since this is a music blog, we feel it's only right to tell you that we caught Richard Marx and Peter Cetera in the mix). The overall effect is a show that's considerably more polished, but doesn't lose its weird charm. Honestly, we have a feeling that even our Awesome Show-hating friends might start watching the next season.

Check It Out with Dr. Steve Brule has that barely ready for Public Access feel for which Heidecker and Wareheim are known. Save for some appearances from Channel 5's Only Married News Team, Reilly carries the bulk of the show as Brule. The premise is that Dr. Brule will teach the audience a little bit about health-related issues by conducting in-studio interviews and traveling to places like the Bob Baker Marionettes. The show is an intentional trainwreck. Dr. Brule can't seem to get anyone's name straight, let alone make sense of the topic he's covering, and the technical problems are frequent. If you don't mind occasionally cringing while you laugh, as we assume is the case for Tim & Eric fans, then you'll probably dig Check It Out as well.

Following the screenings, Heidecker and Wareheim were joined by Reilly for a Q/A session moderated by Richard Dunn (who you might also recognize from Awesome Show) that only kind of answered a few questions. Fans were then given the opportunity to donate $100 to Partners in Health, for which Reilly would record a voicemail greeting as Dr. Brule. The evening concluded with an auction for a date at In-N-Out with the team. The winning bid was $2000.
