This weekend: OK Go, Weezer, Bonobo, Pretty Lights, Lucero, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe
Almost anything goes in the Theater of OK Go.
The art-pop quartet's headlining tour, which concludes Saturday in Los Angeles, has included (according to various online reports): Enough confetti to drown an arena full of Flaming Lips fans; the guys decked out in primary colors; a 3D presentation of the "White Knuckles" video; drummer Dan Konopka playing a song on hand bells; frontman Damian Kulash doing "Last Leaf" from a chair in the middle of the crowd; and all manner of gadgetry and social-media gimmickry.
Oh, and some danceable music from their latest album Of the Blue Colour of the Sky.
The crown princes of what-will-they-think-of-next last week orchestrated a five-hour, eight-mile "musical parade" through the streets of Los Angeles (the route apparently spelled "OK Go") and spent some of this week editing footage from that.
Their show Saturday night at Club Nokia -- where a Fine Frenzy and Summer Darling open -- figures to be more of a circus than a parade, but with a band that gave fans memorable treadmill choreography, Rube Goldberg mastery, Echo Park time lapse and amazing moments with trained dogs, you never know.
Other highlights: Weezer starts a three-city tour on which the band will perform its self-titled debut (1994's "Blue album") in its entirety one night and "Pinkerton" the next, following each with a smatterif of their other hits. It's tonight and Saturday at the Gibson Amphitheatre. ... Ninja Tune hero Bonobo holds forth at the Music Box. ... And funk will be in order when ex-Lenny Kravitz sideman, Greyboy All-Star and saxophonist-vocal Karl Denson brings Karl Denson's Tiny Universe to the El Rey Theatre (joined by the Breakestra).
Also tonight: Shadow Shadow Shade at the Redwood Bar; the Queers at the Troubadour; the Bixby Knolls and Slang Chickens at Spaceland; Attack Attack! at the Fox Theater in Pomona; Pretty Lights at the Wiltern; Gestapo Khazi and Tijuana Panthers /at the Smell; Soulfly at the House of Blues; the Damselles at Casey's Bar downtown; Modern Time Machines at the 5 Star Bar; Nu Savant at the Mint; and Birds & Batteries' 7 p.m. in-store at Origami Vinyl.
