This Weekend: HARD Summer, Silversun Pickups, Weezer, New L.A. Folk Festival, Power of the Riff festival
The two most pressing questions about Saturday's HARD Summer in downtown Los Angeles have nothing to do with quality.
With Soulwax, Crystal Castles and Major Lazer topping a bill that includes the likes of Flying Lotus and Diplo, promoter Gary Richards has assembled the kind of dance party that'll make your glowstick stand up.
But, first, will his fans forgive and forget after the 11th-hour cancellation of HARD Fest last month rendered M.I.A. missing in action?
And will everybody who does show up behave?
You figure the event will be closely monitored in the aftermath of the death of an underage attendee at the Electric Daisy Carnival a couple of months ago. So get your set times here, party hearty and party smartly.
Elsewhere: Silversun Pickups' homecoming show Friday at the Greek Theatre includes Against Me! and the Henry Clay People -- but just over the hill, at the other edge of Griffith Park, there's Local Scene Night at the L.A. Zoo: Voxhaul Broadcast, Walking Sleep, Useless Keys and the Happy Hollows are among the bands playing. ... On Saturday, Weezer and Hot Hot Heat team up at the U.S. Open of Surfing concert at the Huntington Beach Pier. ... The New Los Angeles Folk Festival at Historical Monument 157 brings Linda Perhacs, Mia Doi Todd, Ariana Delawari and a host of others to two stages Saturday afternoon and evening. ... And Beatle alert: Ringo Starr & His All Star Band play the Greek on Saturday.
