This weekend: FYF Fest, Dolly Parton Tribute, Mumiy Troll, Mark Burgess, Stereo Total
The best thing about Saturday's FYF Fest at Los Angeles State Historic Park downtown is that with its wildly diverse lineup and 36 bands, it's a bargain for 30 bucks. The worst thing about Saturday's FYF Fest is that there are only so many hours in the day.
FYF's three stages present some pretty agonizing conflicts if you're hitting the festival with serious music intent and not just to giggle at hipster summer wear. Recommendations? We're here to help (full lineup after the jump):
Noon hour: The exuberant pop of Memphis quintet the Magic Kids gets the nod.
5 o'clock hour: 7Seconds are older than you are, and probably better.
6 o'clock hour: We love our Local Natives here locally, but if you've seen them, flip a coin between the present (Titus Andronicus) and the past (Unbroken).
7 o'clock hour: Sources say Washed Out is about to break out in a big way. We're curious. Nothing against dead men or pharmacists.
8 o'clock hour: Why, School of Seven Bells is playing around dusk? Kind of a no-brainer.
10 o'clock hour: Since Panda Bear didn't bring the rest of the band, it's time to warm up for the big finale with Delorean.
11 o'clock hour: We'll finish with the Rapture. And then call a cab.
Elsewhere this weekend: Inara George hosts the Dolly Parton Tribute at Theatricum Botanicum in Topanga on Saturday (3 p.m.) -- the Living Sisters, Becky Stark, Harper Simon, Dan Bern, Sara Melson and Charlie Wadhams are among the performers. ... Russian rockers Mumiy Troll return to the Roxy tonight, with Run Run Run opening.
Also Friday: The Pity Party and Spirit Vine at 5 Stars Bar; Sky Parade and the Quarter After at the Bootleg Theater; Delorean and Superhumanoids at the Grandstar in Chinatown; Stereo Total and Kisses at the Echoplex; the Delta Mirror at Spaceland; the Pity Party and Spirit Vine at downtown's 5 Star Bar; Earth, Wind & Fire at the Hollywood Bowl; Southern Culture on the Skids at the Echo; Ceci Bastida and Nina Dioz at the Glass House; Venrez at the Troubadour; Rocco Deluca and JBM at the Hotel Cafe; the Mau Maus at the Redwood Bar; Uriah and Lords of Ruin at the Viper Room; and Bleeding Through at the Key Club.
Also Saturday: Mark Burgess of the Chameleons UK (with full band), Veil Veil Vanish and Repeater at the Troubadour; the English Beat at the Roxy; Cherry Poppin' Daddies at the Mint; Dan Bern at the Hotel Cafe; Earth, Wind & Fire at the Hollywood Bowl; Youth Brigade at the Glass House; George Glass at Pehrspace; The Kris Special at Echo Curio; Francisco the Man at the Redwood Bar; and Imperial Stars at the Viper Room.
Also Sunday: FYF Fan Fest featuring the Rapture and Panda Bear at an undisclosed location (tickets/info available at FYF Fest); Dre Allen at the Troubadour; the Gories at Spaceland; and Cobalt Cranes at Echo Curio.
And, since it's a holiday weekend, coming Monday: Three great September residencies kick off -- Eastern Conference Champions at Spaceland, Vanaprasta/Pacific Hurt (co-residency) at the Echo; and Family of the Year at the Silverlake Lounge.
