This Weekend: Dâm-Funk, Jane's Addiction, Hootenanny, Mates of State, Baths, CocoRosie
Chalk it up to one of music's little mysteries -- how the old synths and creaky drum machines on Dâm-Funk's sprawling Toeachizown can sound so new.
L.A.'s "Ambassador of Boogie Funk," born Damon Riddick, unleashed that double-CD, five-LP collection on the world last year, and he continues to spring new tracks to his followers on twitter.com/damfunk.
Should be quite a dance party tonight at the Troubadour, where Dâm-Funk is joined by Master Blazter (Computer Jay, J-1 and D-F), Stone's Throw Records honcho Peanut Butter Wolf, MC Eiht and Devonwho.
Elsewhere: Jane's Addiction's surprise show goes off tonight at the Roxy. ... The annual rockabilly party known as Hootenanny convenes at Oak Canyon Ranch in Irvine with legends Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis headlining a bill that includes Nick 13 from Tiger Army, the Old 97's and Shooter Jennings. ... Mates of State does two nights at the Echo that the duo is presenting as a variety show -- Free Energy opens, and there will be comedians and all manner of shenanigans. ... And Baths celebrates the release of his Anticon debut "Cerulean" on Saturday at the Troubadour with Daedelus, El Ten Eleven and Matthewdavid.
