Star Warz Burlesque Interviews: R2-D2 Speaks! Dancer/Contortionist Sin Fisted on Her Droid Inspirations

At Devil's Playground's burlesque extravaganza Star Warz, C-3PO twitched, shimmied and tassel-twirled across the stage as little R2-D2 stood quietly in the background. But, when C-3PO finished, R2 began to stir and out popped a leggy, limber blonde.

Sin Fisted, who portrayed the droid, caught the crowd by surprised, but kept them mesmerized with seven minutes of contorting, pop-and-locking and pole stunts set to "Android Porn" by Kraddy.

What did you have to consider about the character and the show when you were selecting the music?

Since R2 is a robot, I wanted something with a fat bassline, good break-beats, changes and pauses and with a splash of erotica. Lots of electronic sounds glitching and with the R2 samples added to it, it was just perfect!

It was a long song, so I had enough time to perform my floor work, contortion skills as well as a few extreme pole tricks (my set ran seven minutes). I also picked it because it has a few "fake out" endings (where you think the song is over and it springs back to life). I like to catch people off guard and have that element of surprise.

Can you describe what it was like to be inside the R2 unit on stage for the first half of the C-3PO/R2-D2 set?

R2-D2 was actually quite spacious inside. We thought it was going to be a lot smaller and that I'd have to start the show barefoot and slip my heels on during my set, but that wasn't the case at all. They had plenty of air vents so I could breath easy and I wouldn't get sweaty inside with all the stage lights blasting on me.

I actually had fun inside R2. There was a couple of holes where I would flick LED lights on and off during C3PO's set and the audience thought I was just an electronic prop. So, I wasn't bored just sitting in there, in a way, I was still a part of the show

and when my song started and I popped out of R2, people went INSANE! Again, I love the element of surprise and it seemed perfect to have a contortionist inside R2-D2.

What was it about R2-D2 that influenced your choreography for Star Warz?

Several things influenced my look as well as choreography.

For my look, I made my character an android. Considering I have hinges tattooed on my elbows and knees, it seemed appropriate.

I used all of the same colors as R2 (white, silver, blue & black). My nails were all randomly painted in R2 colors. I even did my eyes just like R2 (one big black eye and one small white eye). I did my hair so it looked like plugs/android/doll hair. I had wires taped to my back (very Ghost In The Shell) which I ended up tearing off during my performance. I also had lights all over me (some in my hair, around my neck, on my body and on one of my high heels). Some people thought I looked a little frightening, but most everyone thought it was brilliant.

Considering I was going for the "android" thing, I choreographed my movements to seem "not normal" for humans and I also wanted to look like I was glitching out a little bit. Some of my floorwork consists of a crawl where my legs come over the shoulders as I crawl forward, very creepy but I think is appropriate for an android. After all, androids are meant to look like humans but generally are faster, stronger and more flexible, right?

R2-D2 is stranded in L.A. on a Friday night. Where does she go to pass the time?

Hahaha, R2 would most likely call up a few android and robot friends and sneak into several nightclubs, wheel around the dance floor for a while, find some afterparty shenanigans to get into, get an oil change and head back home to recharge.
