Richie Hawtin, Moonshadows Summer Sessions and Minuit
Minimal rhythm-master Richie Hawtin brings his bag of tech tricks to L.A. this week, and his electro-house soundscapes and intense persona behind the decks are not to be missed. A leader in the Detroit techno scene and one of many DJ/producers who have spent transformative time in Germany (this event marks his Berlin-based label M_nus’ 10-year anniversary), the Canadian-bred Hawtin is known for his modernist approach and experimentalist zeal, his work as Plastikman and F.U.S.E. included. Whatever name he uses and wherever he hangs his headphones, the guy is a digital DJ ground-breaker with the skills to move a floor and challenge it at the same time. Cinespace, 6356 Hollywood Blvd., Hlywd.; Sat., May 31, 9 p.m.-4 a.m. www.trafficevents.com.
If you’re in the mood for a more scenic sonic experience, check out Moonshadows Summer Sessions, where U.K. DJ Harvey (Sarcastic Disco) plays a five-hour set at sunset by the sea. Now residing in L.A., the eccentric house ham melds unique remix bits, trippy edits and surprising selections. Moonshadows, Blue Lounge, 20356 Pacific Coast Hwy., Malibu; Sat., May 31, 6 p.m.-mid. www.moonshadowsmalibu.com/bluelounge.
New Zealand’s break-beat darlings Minuit [minweee!] make their debut at Monday Social a few days later, and the duo — producer Ryan Paul and singer Ruth — are sure to impress with emotive grooves that also pack a potent punch. The openers are no slouches, either: Crystal Method’s Scott Kirkland and Uberzone warm up the crowd (more like scorch it, actually) beforehand. Nacional, 1645 Wilcox Ave., Hlywd.; Mon., June 2, 10 p.m.-2 a.m. www.mondaysocial.com.
