Power-Duo the Covers!: Supergrass Offshoot Hot Rats at Spaceland Tonight
Gaz Coombes and Danny Goffey are bona fide Britpop stars in the UK as core members of Supergrass, a band that never fully made it in America. Coombes and Goffey took a hiatus from Supergrass sessions to mess around with some of their favorite tunes as a White Stripes-style "power duo." The resulting covers set, produced by definitive Radiohead knob-twiddler Nigel Goodrich, has just been released as Turn Ons, credited to The Hot Rats.
Tonight the Hot Rats will be presenting the album at Spaceland (and at the Troubadour on Thursday), where fans will have a chance to check out their versions of songs by the Cure, the Beatles, the Velvet Underground, the Beastie Boys, and the Kinks. "It was great to hear back from Ray Davies," Goffey recently told the Village Voice. "When people do covers of his stuff, he likes them to bring different stuff to the song to make it sound different. We kinda did that with 'Big Sky.' It feels like you're getting merit marks from a teacher."
Superg...oops! Hot Rats
