Pete Wentz and Mark Hoppus dream of Wonderland in 8-Bit

Thursday night, fans of Tim Burton, Fall Out Boy and Blink 182 headed to Universal City Walk for a special screening of Alice in Wonderland featuring a Q/A session with Almost Alice soundtrack performers Pete Wentz and Mark Hoppus. The two musicians collaborated on the song "In Transit" for the album, which is more of a collection of songs inspired by Alice and her friends than music from the film, and indicated to the audience that this might just be the beginning of a new project for the duo.

Before the screening, Erin Broadley and I chatted with Wentz and Hoppus about Alice in Wonderland, Hot Topic and Star Wars.

The Roots of "In Transit"

Pete Wentz: Mark actually did it in a way that I thought was really smart. He broke out some of the Alice text, went back to it and looked at it and looked at how he could apply those ideas to lyrics.

Upcoming Events

Mark Hoppus: I've loved Alice in Wonderland pretty much my whole life. It's one of my favorite books. I love the Disney version as well. I have The Annotated Alice and it's cool to see everyone's take on the same idea.

The mind frame that we came from was more from the original book than the movies. It's really about how everyone feels isolated and everyone looks at everyone else and everyone else gets looked at and judged and everyone's world is an amalgamation of all these different things. What you are isn't necessarily what you think you are, it's what other people think you are.

Least favortie Burton film? Planet of the Apes

Favorite Tim Burton Film

PW: I think I'm going to go with Edward Scissorhands.

MH: I'll go with that too. I'm not sure if that's actually my favorite, but I think that makes us sound the coolest.

PW: I have a whole sleeve [tattoo], I guess, of The Nightmare Before Christmas, from before it got cool and Hot Topic.

Erin Broadley: [Laughs] But you're "cool and Hot Topic."

MH: I liked Fall Out Boy before it got cool and Hot Topic.

How They Would Remake Alice

MH: An 8-bit one using Star Wars action figures. A stormtrooper could be the white rabbit. Obviously, Darth Vader would be the Red Queen. Alice would be Princess Leia.

PW: Alice would be Princess Leia? Luke is Leia. No, Alice. Luke's on the journey. The Mad Hatter is Solo.

MH: Greedo has to be, uh...

Liz Ohanesian: The Caterpillar?

MH: For sure.
