ROCK & ROLL OVER
Every self-respecting Ramones fan has beheld Rock n Roll High School countless times, but that didnt keep em away last Friday from the Hollywood Forever Cemetery where Dee Dees buried and Johnnys got a statue for a benefit screening organized by Johnnys widow, Linda. Famous fans and cast members spoke, including Marky Ramone, P.J. Soles, Rodney Bingenheimer and Clint Howard (who noted he was proud to appear in a film his more famous bro, Ron, was cut out of)! Vincent Gallo rambled on, fittingly, like a lobotomy victim, and Rancids Lars Fredrickson admitted to masturbating to Soles Riff Randell (he cant be alone). Also paying tribute: Rob Zombie, Chili Peps Flea and Anthony Kiedis, Rose McGowan, Billy Zoom and Henry Rollins (who we hear is writing the foreword to the autobiography Johnny left behind). Stephen Hauptfuhrs new Enter the Dragon night at Chinatowns Mountain Bar continued the celluloid theme later that night, with Atomica and Beautiful Decay mags hosting DJs, bad karate-film projections and free massages sans happy ending.
Ever since campy cover boys Metal Skool moved up the Strip to The Roxy, The Viper Room has struggled to find an equally heavyweight humdinger. (And by the way, the Skools moving again, to The Key Club, beginning July 18.) Looks like Frankie & Tommys Social Club on Thursdays is the Vipers new monthly celeb slam-jam. Last week, nerdy hit-makers Maroon 5 held court at a table while pals Palo Alto played, and a disheveled Bijou I consider myself one of the greatest dancers on the planet Phillips shook and shimmied so bizarrely she stole thunder from performing buddy Samantha Ronson. Bombastic Bijou (who also claimed she started the Ugg-boot fad in a recent interview) was joined by Jake Gyllenhaal, with squeeze Kirsten Dunst in tow, for some over-the-top, meta-ironic, extremely white-boy booty-bumpin to Bette Davis Eyes. That was our cue to head for the hills the Hollywood Hills, that is, where Loose Tooth at Forbidden City took its decidedly funkier first-night bite. Unfortunately, with guest list and set-time snafus (the band She Wants Revenge went on two hours late), this one may have been a little too loose.
TRENDY TIPSTERS / BROKE HIPSTERS
Speaking of The List, self-proclaimed clipboard bitch Clint Catalyst offered helpful hints on how to get on it and what to do if youre not, at last weeks Skylight Books release party for Jennifer Blowdryers Good Advice for Young Trendy People of All Ages. The events hipster makeover panel also included Party Monsters James St. James. We tried to put their tips into action on Saturday at Shepard Faireys packed Subliminal Projects gallery (above the Wiltern), where we took in works by rockin sureshot Piper Ferguson, Devos Mark Mothersbaugh and the Weeklys own Cobrasnake showing pics of (surprise!) cute/drunk females which were a huge hit with the dudes. We did, however, overhear one amateur critic balk at the prices: For $150 each, they should come with the chicks phone number! Snap!
