New Garage Explosion: Garage, Part 2
Car-pimpin' rock patrons Scion have partnered up with VBS.tv to present their first full-length documentary, New Garage Explosion, about the bands and culture surrounding the genre of music loosely known as garage. What exactly is garage? Theories: "balls-out fun rock & roll," "three minutes or less with as few words as possible," "bands, dudes writing songs together." The bands highlighted in the film are more or less just that: a bunch of dudes writing balls-out fun rock & roll songs together that are about three minutes or less. After a crash-course on the Sonics, the Standells, the Lollipop Shoppe), the doc's focus turns to the present. Bands from all over the country — San Francisco, Portland, Oakland, Detroit, New York, even San Juan — talk about their experiences with the music over performances by Thee Oh Sees, Dávila 666, King Khan and the BBQ, the Vivian Girls, Black Lips and the Dirtbombs. The documentary is currently making the rounds in venues across the country. Mick Collins of the Dirtbombs and Timmy Vulgar of Human Eye will be present for a post-screening Q&A. Go, cat, go.
New Garage Explosion screens Wed., April 27, 7 p.m., at the Landmark, 10850 W. Pico Blvd., W.L.A.
