Memorial Day to Remember
Reasons why Memorial Day weekend usually isn’t as anticlimactic/amateurish partywise as other holidays: day-to-evening outdoor frolicking, dressing down (not up), and, most important, recovery Monday for most of us! Here, our Memorial mixer picks. With spinners including Mark Farina, Raul Campos, Franky Boissy and more pumping it poolside, the popular Wet party is sure to live up to its name in more ways than one this year. Custom Hotel, 8639 Lincoln Blvd., L.A.; Sat., May 23, 1-10 p.m. www.homemadela.com. Retox Detox Sundays kicks off at the Avalon Hotel with rock & roll, indie, electro, ’70s and ’80s sounds, plus swimming, food and drink (and real detox) specials. 9400 W. Olympic Blvd., Beverly Hills; Sun., May 24, 2-8 p.m. The Standard Downtown is always a favorite for pool groovin’, and Room Service, featuring Canadian DJ/producer Fred Everything’s electro-mash, will be a splash. 550 S. Flower St., dwntwn.; Sun., May 24, 1-9 p.m. www.trafficevents.com. Open Air Sundays offers extended hours for the holiday, and an impressive DJ lineup in a patio setting: Dave Dresden (of Gabriel & Dresden), Kristina Sky, Los BPM’s Paris and more. Wokcano, 1413 Fifth St., Santa Monica; Sun., May 24, 2 p.m.-4 a.m. www.soundscapela.com. There’s some good thumping indoors, too. Hard turns the Palladium into a Deadmau5 house (and his full live show is supposed to be sicky like Mickey). Palladium, 6215 Sunset Blvd., Hlywd.; Fri., May 22. www.hardfest.com. There’ll be darker deck sounds heard (and sights seen) at Malediction Society’s gothy dress-up Aristocracy Ball, with Xian and guests. Montecristo, 3400 Wilshire Blvd., L.A.; Sun., May 24. www.ladead.com. And the Tigerheat crew brings its boy-toy action to a more intimate space — One Night Stand at MJ’s (2810 Hyperion Ave., Silver Lake; Sun., May 24, 9 p.m.) — and a Westside wonderland, Heartthrob, at House of Blues, 8430 Sunset Blvd., W. Hlywd.; Mon., May 25, 9 p.m. www.clubtigerheat.com.
