Live in L.A. This Weekend: Drive-By Truckers, Peter Gabriel, Les Savy Fav, First Fridays
You may not have noticed if you don't live in a neighborhood where "y'all" is the prevalent pronoun -- and no, that's not pejorative -- but the Drive-By Truckers have a new album out. "The Big To-Do" is just that, out-sized riffs, growling vocals and sweat-stained rhythms supporting the Athens, Ga.-based outfit's brutally honest tales of the disaffected and the down-and-out. It's stuff that revels in the grandest (and grittiest) traditions of Southern rock. Just think of tonight's show at the Avalon -- where local working-class rockers the Henry Clay People support -- as something of a turpitude check.
Elsewhere: Art-rock crazies Les Savy Fav do a double-dip in L.A. this weekend, playing the Saturdays Off the 405 event at the Getty Museum and then reconvening at the Echoplex on Sunday. ... Speaking of art institutions, tonight's installment of First Fridays at the Natural History Museum features Swedish folkie the Tallest Man on Earth and Gamble House. ... The FYF Fest Fan Appreciation Show, at three Pomona venues on Saturday and headquartered at the Glass House, features Fucked Up, the Strange Boys, the Like and Darker My Love, among others. ... Patti LaBelle does it right on Mother's Day, bringing her vintage R&B to the Gibson Amphitheatre on Sunday. ... And my weekend under-the-radar favorite: Local quartet Warpaint, whose debut may be out by the end of the summer on Rough Trade, joins Priestbird at the Bootleg Theater on Saturday.
Also tonight: Peter Gabriel at the Hollywood Bowl; the Ben Stiller-Josh Homme Bring the Rock Benefit at Largo; Mastodon at the Fox Theater in Pomona; Mono at the El Rey Theatre; Powder at the Key Club; Pato Banton at the Roxy; Hurricane Bells at the Echo; the Janks at Spaceland; I See Hawks in L.A. and Old Californio at the Redwood Bar; VoicesVoices at the Smell; Seasons at Pehrspace; Joey Ryan and Kenneth Pattengale at the Hotel Cafe; Gunpowder Secrets at the Viper Room; the Monthlies at Casey's; and Meredith Meyer at the Unknown Theater.
