Live in L.A.: Junip (with José González), Hot Hot Heat / Eastern Conference Champions, Shellshag, Local H, Strangeloop
It's not like José González always traded in soft stuff; the Swedish singer-songwriter with Argentine bloodlines got his start in a Gothenburg punk bands before marrying his velvety voice and nylon-stringed guitar to fashion the sound you probably first heard on "The O.C." His side project with drummer Elias Araya and keyboardist Tobias Winterkorn, Junip, is more warm and fuzzy than loud and buzzy -- their "Rope and Summit" EP (which you can score here for free) derives its almost-hypnotic intimacy from González's familiar acoustic guitar and gentle melodies and Winterkorn's smooth work on the organ and Moog. A full-length album is due Sept. 14, and tonight Junip is joined by formerly L.A.-based folkie Ferraby Lionheart (whose own new album "The Jack of Hearts" comes out in August) for a show at the Eagle Rock Center for the Arts.
Elsewhere: Long-running Chicago rockers Local H headline the Troubadour as part of a tour with a distinctive twist: The band tosses all six of its albums in a hat; an audience member draws one; and the band plays it front to back. ... Hot Hot Heat's residency at the Bootleg Theater continues, with support from "Twilight" soundtrack underdogs Eastern Conference Champions. ... Brooklyn punkers Shellshag, with L.A.'s Signals, hits Spaceland. ... And it'll be a feast for the eyes and ears at Low End Theory at the Airliner, where Strangeloop and Shlohmo are on the menu.
Also: Ashes Divide and Falling Still at the Viper Room; David Rodigan at Dub Club's Sumemr Kickoff Party at the both the Echo and Echoplex; Chicago and the Doobie Brothers at Gibson Amphitheatre; Andy McKee at the Mint; Lunar Youth and Actress at the Silverlake Lounge; the Damn Sons at 3 Clubs; and Everest doing a free in-store at Amoeba at 7.
