Foo Fighters guitarist Chris Shiflett has taken a detour off the radio rock superhighway and found himself on a country road. His side project Chris Shiflett & the Dead Peasants -- inspired by a trip a couple years ago to rockabilly's answer to Coachella, the Hootenanny in Orange County -- finds the 39-year-old guitar-slinger coaxing twangy laments out of his Martin acoustic, finding giddy-up in a couple of open-road electric numbers and rounding out of the Peasants' sound with mandolin, pedal steel and keys. Yes, it's nothing like Shiflett's other side project, the punky Jackson United, but props to a guy for spending two months this winter recording an album of Americana when he could probably have been on a Caribbean island. That eponymous album, made at the Foo Fighters' Studio 606 in L.A., is due out July 13 on RCA-affiliated imprint Le Coq Napoleon, and the band (which includes Derek Silverman on keyboards and John Lousteau on drums) is currently on tour supporting Jesse Malin, whose own new album "Love It to Life" is earning some of the best reviews of his long career. Tonight, the bands pair up for a show at the Bootleg Theater, and they hit Alex's Bar in Long Beach on Friday.
Elsewhere: Fitz & the Tantrums continue their Thursday night residency at Spaceland, and supporting this week will be San Francisco quartet Sonny & the Sunsets. ... At the Troubadaour, it's Canadian rockers Holy Fuck, joined by Portland duo Nice Nice. ... Great trio of local acts doing a free show at 3 Clubs: Francisco the Man, Chasing Kings and Gamble House. ... And Wayne "The Train" Hancock is back at the Mint behind his sixth album, "Viper of Melody."
