Live in L.A.: Carole King/James Taylor, the Besnard Lakes, Crash Kings, Jakob Dylan
Loudest husband-and-wife team in music today? My vote would go to Olga Goreas and Jace Lasek of Montreal quartet the Besnard Lakes. The foursome crafts the kind of sprawling art-rock epics that you'd think could change weather patterns, warm and inviting in one passage, icy and distant the next. Their latest album "The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night" (Jagjaguwar) has the feel of a chamber orchestra doing battle with shoegazers, but really it's win-win, music that transports the listener to another dimension. Here, download "Albatross" courtesy of the label. And see the Besnard Lakes' famously bombastic live show tonight at the Troubadour, where local trio the Happy Hollows open.
Elsewhere: Speaking of the Troubadour, some of that room's history takes the stage at the Hollywood Bowl tonight -- Carole King and James Taylor, touring behind their new CD/DVD release "Live at the Troubadour," which captured a stand they did in November 2007 to celebrate their original performances at the West Hollywood club 40 years ago. ... The Crash Kings' single "Mountain Man" hit No. 1 on the so-called alternative charts in late March, and the guitarless L.A.-based alternative rockers return to the Roxy tonight, just short of one year after their debut album was released.
Also: Drake at sold-out Club Nokia; Jakob Dylan and Three Legs (featuring Neko Case and Kelly Hogan), with the Felice Brothers and HoneyHoney opening, at the Wiltern; Ben Folds and a Piano at the Fonda Theatre; Mississippi Man and Pepper Rabbit at the Echo; See Green and Common Loon at the Silverlake Lounge; Ninjasonik at Spaceland; Frank Fairfield at Echo Curio; John Carpenter at Space 15 Twenty; Hypocrisy at the House of Blues; Carney at the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa; and City Museum's farewell show at the Viper Room.
