LA will be in-FEST-ed this weekend. The Sunset Strip Music Fest in West Hollywood and the Mad Decent Block Party downtown are the banner events, but those looking for something more intimate -- yet still boasting wide-ranging musical amusements -- have some great choices too. Here are the best bets.

Judging by the name Shhh! we should keep this one hush-hush, but we just can't! After all, we've been hearing good things about this monthly dance party. Plus, one of our favorite door gals/drag performers in L.A. is celebrating her birthday this Sunday there -- the one and only Miss Barbie-Q. She and DJ Eric Ad-ams offer funk goodness from back in the day, including Prince, Sheila E, The Gap Band, Zapp, Chic, Stacey Q, and Expose. Also, there are drink specials, so this free fete ain't gonna be a secret for much longer. At Akbar, 4356 W. Sunset Blvd. www.akbarsilverlake.com
New York City's semi-legendary club Mattachine comes to L.A. with a rare DJ set from John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig And The Angry Inch), plus PJ DeBoy & Paul Dawson (Shortbus). Performance art by Amber Martin (Amber Alert) rounds out the entertainment. The NYC dance orgy has been on a club tour across the country, promoting "ethical homosexual culture" that goes beyond the clichés. Expect curated sounds of "queer yesteryear" -- classic rock, soul, funk, punk, country and New Wave. At La Cita, 336 S. Hill St, Los Angeles, CA 90013. Facebook invite here. See our interview with John Cameron Mitchell here.
