Last Night: The All Ladies Choir and AsDSSka at Family Bookstore
Sunday night at Family Bookstore on Fairfax found an assorted bunch of artsy types milling around waiting for the The All Ladies Choir and David Scott Stone and Aska to perform. The event was for a screening of Aska's new music video, which was shot by Spike Jonze and Crystal Moselle (which West Coast Sound highlighted last week).

The Ladies Choir was actually a smaller version of its usual size, as the group's leader, Becky Stark -- best known as the singer/songwriter for LA's Lavender Diamond -- is on tour with the Decemberists. Apparently Lady Choir companions can perform when they please -- feel the moment, as they say. They managed to get everyone in the audience to feel said moment with a rousing rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." The Lady Choir itself was dressed in an assortment of pastel fringe and floaty dresses to match Family's multi-hued rainbow display of mix tapes, comics and books.
After their set, Aska (of the Sads and Moonrats) and David Scott Stone performed live to the projected, aforementioned Spike Jonze video. The duo's playing was hypnotic and beautiful, filling the room with a focused hush as all present took a big sigh of relief, stopped looking around the room at who else was in attendance and slipped blissfully into the noise of the moment: a sweeping, sleepy, dreamy thing.
