Last Night: Celeb Packed DJ AM Benefit at Avalon, Rockin' til the Early Hours

By Pamela Chelin

It was a packed house at Avalon last night in Hollywood with a line extending down the street. DJ AM, who survived a plane crash (along with Travis Barker) in South Carolina recently, threw a party to raise funds for the families of the victims who were tragically killed in the crash.

At 20 dollars a ticket, the good cause/good times evening had a slew of famous DJs including Mix Master Mike, DJ Momjeans (a.k.a actor Danny Masterson), Cut Chemist, Mark Ronson w/Dirt Nasty (a.k.a. Simon Rex), Steve Aoki w/Uffi and a performance by Shwayze on the main stage. DJs Mike B (who spins with AM at LAX on Sunday nights), Fashen, Homicide, Vice, Spider, Jus Ske and Adam 12 held court upstairs in the Bardot room. The outside smoking area, dance floors and balconies were packed, the VIP section with its bottle service was filled to the brim, and the main stage had a string of turntables and computers set against a backdrop of vertical lights as each DJ did his set.

One Australian visitor to L.A. said, "My cousin is obsessed with AM and this is the coolest thing I've been to in L.A. in the three weeks since I've been here." Other fans said they found out about the event on MySpace. Whatever the case, the club was filled with a variety of people including Hollywood club kids, hipsters and celebrities Tila Tequila, rapper Too Short, actor Wilmer Valderrama, singer Macy Gray and actress Hilary Duff.

One thing that was clear all night long (and the party was long, ending after 3 a.m.) was the love everyone showed for DJ AM.

"AM taught me how to mix in '99," said Danny Masterson after his set. "So, I'd do anything and everything he'd ask me to do. I'm just happy he's safe." Masterson's sister, Alanna, was also in attendance, brought with her Hilary Duff who said, "We're here to support the families and AM."

Wearing one of the $20 DJ AM shirts being sold at the event with the proceeds going to the victims' families, Simon Rex said, "I was invited by Mark (Ronson) to do a couple of songs. I'm friends with Travis and AM and I came to support."

"AM's one of my closest friends," said DJ Steve Aoki. "I love him dearly and I'm glad to be part of this whole thing. I played with Travis and AM that night (of the crash). I'm happy to do this and to give my 20 bucks. It's horrible what happened."

Though it was unknown if DJ AM would actually be in attendance last night, he emerged on stage to a grand roar from the audience and admitted being "honestly speechless" and "in shock" by the crowded club filled with such enthusiastic support. "Please say a prayer for Travis," said AM. "I love you guys. Thank you so much. I hope you have fun. Peace."
