Now in its fourth year, Echo Park Rising isn't held in one big corralled area; instead, it takes place in some 35 different spots, all over Echo Park.
There will be great food, comedy, art, and, of course live music, 300 artists or so in total. It runs today through Sunday, and it's all free!
Here's the complete schedule. Below you'll find our specific suggestions for what you should check out.
This year's line-up is stacked with L.A. Weekly favorites, including Bonfire Beach (Sunday, 9pm, Echoplex) and De Lux (Friday, 11pm, Echoplex), who were featured on our 10 L.A. Bands Who Will Blow Up in 2014 survey. Meanwhile, two finalists in our Best Live Band competition will be performing as well, winners Mars and the Massacre (Saturday, 11:30pm, Lot 1) and runners-up Yoya (Friday, 9:20pm, Methodist Church).
Stones Throw Records founder Peanut Butter Wolf (Saturday, 9:20pm, Taix Main Stage) will be showing off three decades of vinyl DJing skills, while labelmates Myron & E (Saturday, 8pm, Taix Main Stage) will perform modern soul-funk.
Garage rockers Together Pangea (Saturday, 7:55pm, Echoplex) and Audacity (Saturday, 6:10pm, Echoplex) are sure to stir up some moshing, while surf rockers Froth (Sunday, 8:40pm, Part Time Punks) and Corners (Friday, 4:30pm, Taix Main Stage), hot off their Echo residency last month, will chill you out with fuzzy, psychedelic vibes.
Then there's Morgan Delt (Saturday, 8pm, The Echo) the Topanga Canyon crooner who our critic Jeff Weiss calls "a psychedelic bug-out one-man band who is probably the best musician to emerge from the village since VW campers were in vogue." And Matthewdavid (Friday, 9:20pm, Echoplex), whose beats, Weiss says, are "carefully sculpted, codeine-slow and without formula."
Teenage duo Girlpool (Saturday, 4:30 pm at Pilates & Arts and 7:20pm at Methodist Church) will offer a vulnerable, stripped-down set, and Death Valley Girls (Saturday, 7:35pm, IAM8BIT Gallery) will shred alongside high school rockers Cherry Glazerr (Friday, 7:10pm, Taix Main Stage), who have been busy blowing the hell up.
Dream poppers Tashaki Miyaki (Saturday, 6pm, Origami Vinyl) will send you off into a haze while singer-songwriter Colleen Green (Friday, 7:20pm, the Echo) may well be in one herself. The krautrock/protopunk Gothic Tropic (Saturday, 2:50pm, Taix Main Stage) will round out the list of the top rising female-fronted bands Echo Park Rising has to offer.
The Record Company (Sunday, 4:45pm, Echoplex) will bring their Mississippi-backwoods sounding blues rock, while Joel Jerome, formerly of Dios and now the go-to recording engineer for the local psych-rock scene (Cherry Glazerr, Froth, Tishaki Miyaki), showcases his latest project, Babies On Acid (Saturday, 7pm, Echoplex).
Get ready, because this weekend is about to be one of the best of the summer.
