Go to Rhino Records! The Westside Music Institution Temporarily Re-Opens Today as Pop-Up Shop
Think the Rhino Records Store is gone? Think again. The long time outpost for Rhino records shuttered a few years back when owner Richard Foos closed up shop due to economic hardship. But this week, Foos brings the store back as a two week pop-up shop just down the street from the original Westwood Blvd. location, where he will put his personal collection up for sale. Richard Foos, Rhino's founder, is moving to New York, so instead of packing up thousands of DVDs and albums, he's selling them to the public. The proceeds will benefit Chrysalis Enterprises, an L.A. nonprofit that helps homeless people develop job skills and find work. The Rhino Records store first opened in Westwood in 1973 and Foos started the Rhino Records label in the back of the store in 1978. Foos and the Rhino store were hit hard by music industry woes and many museo fearmongers cited the shop's closure as a death-knell for independent music stores. But it ain't over 'til it's over. Today through May 31, the Rhino pop up will also include performances, screenings, and cheap vinyl. Expect to see some cameos from notable musicians who will pay respects to Rhino's West Coast legacy.
Full schedule after the jump.
