A Flock of Seagulls

Pershing Square

July 16, 2011

British new wave band A Flock of Seagulls took their name from The Stranglers' song "Toiler On The Sea." They were an MTV staple, and it makes sense that the resurgence of new wave would bring them back to popular culture. In the past decade they've been featured in VH1 specials, video games, and frequently referenced in television and film.

The group broke up in the mid '80s, briefly reunited in 2002, and then immediately broke up again. Front man Mike Score has been touring as A Flock of Seagulls for years with a new band, and they played a free show Saturday night as part of the Pershing Square summer concert series.

They played for nearly an hour and a half in front of more than a thousand people, seemingly equal parts old fans and next-generation devotees, many of whom were dancing. They band were tight enough to perform without backing tracks, and sounded great, breaking into solos often. Their jam at the end of "She Won't Let You Down" was considerably heavier and more distorted than anything you'd expect from them. It worked.

Critical bias: A Flock of Seagulls weren't as tight as OMD on their recent L.A. visit, but nonetheless executed without obvious flaw.
