Family of the Year: Read Our Profile and Stream Their New Album
Family of the Year, a bubbling four-piece Silver Lake indie pop group that's as tight-knit as their name suggests, make songs that are ludicrously, preposterously catchy.
The familial camaraderie of their name comes from guitarist Joe Keefe and drummer Sebastian Keefe, brothers who left both Boston and their previous bands to form the group. The act became fully realized when bassist Jamesy Bucker and keyboardist Christina Schroeter came on. They didn't take things all that seriously at first, but that's all changed. Their sophomore album, Loma Vista, comes out today; they have an album release party at High-Fidelity record shop at 8 p.m.
Family of the Year specialize in the kind of jangly, hook-driven pop that's the perfect opening foil for acts such as Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Mumford & Sons. The were hand-selected by Ben Folds to play a show with Folds and the Boston Pops Symphony just two shows into their career.
Their lyrics aren't particularly deep -- sometimes quite the contrary -- but it's music for folks who like their melodies strong and memorable.
They've just getting off a two-week residency at the Bootleg Theatre where they didn't charge for entry. "We enjoy what we do, so we're not so concerned about charging people at this point," says Joe Keefe.
The band has drawn the attention of a number of media outlets, such as Nylon, Filter, Stereogum and others. That's largely due to their infectiousness; it's almost impossible to get the windswept hook of "St. Croix" (above) out of your head. My editor Ben Westhoff likes them so much he plays them in the office constantly.
"It's kind of hard to understand [how it's happened], but I love the fact that people are paying attention to us," says Joe.

They've got something of a post-Arcade Fire sound, full of anthemic tunes. Loma Vista is expansive and fun, packed with songs that are singalong-ready, such as the album's first single, "Diversity."
The fun didn't come easily, however -- Family of the Year worked hard to craft the work, as their fan base has amassed. "Higher stakes make a better sounding record," Keefe explains. "It allows us to really take a look at stuff and be more honest about it."
