Dance Club Picks: Firecracker Celebrates Its Birthday with Biz Markee
Ten years and still smokin,’ the Chinatown groove-fest known as Firecracker continues to light up L.A. nightlife with its notable DJ lineups, inclusive vibe and creative approach to partying. It goes without saying that you’ll never encounter attitude, velvet ropes or the same old banger-rap heard at other hip-hop clubs at this long-running fave, which is surely why it’s lasted so long. What began as a sweaty underground gathering has, in fact, evolved into a mega-cool multifaceted multiculti celebration of music and art, with regular block-party events, live sounds, painting and percussion, and consistently stellar DJ guests. They’re definitely marking this decade b-day in a big way. The legendary Biz Markie will be in da house, spinning — and hopefully body-busting — beats like only he can. Also adding color and sparks to mix: Tittsworth, the 87 Stick-Up Kids’ Rockwell and residents Kutmah, Eric Coleman, Future Paris, King Wo and Azul (the funky fellas who’ve helped keep this biweekly bash a blast after all these years). Here’s to 10 more! Grand Star, 943 N. Broadway, Chinatown; Fri., Nov. 7, 9:30 p.m.–2 a.m.; $10. www.myspace.com/fckr.
