Wonder Women: DJ Irene, Wigout

By Lina Lecaro
Thursday, March 13, 2008 - 9:00 pm

Hard-house and trance fans alike bow to the beats of DJ Irene around the globe, so a set by this L.A. native in her hometown is always cause for celebration. Despite her battles with personal demons and the boys club that used to dominate local DJ decks, Irene’s ferocity and fresh takes on progressive dance music mixin’ always make for a boisterous dance bash, so expect Red to rock extra wild when this woman starts whirling. Circus, 6655 Santa Monica Blvd., Hlywd.; Sat., March 15, 10 p.m.-4 a.m.; over 21; see www.nexxez.com for ticket info.

A very different kind of diva enjoys the spotlight at Wigout at the Stone Bar the same night. Host Jeanatalia’s long-running monthly is all about big, beautiful (faux) follicles, and this month the heady happening’s “Get Your Flapper On” theme goes ’20s with live performances by Jeanatalia, Aaron & Atom, Kitty Diggins, Ten West, Ian MacKinnon & Angelita of Discount Cruise to Hell, Creekbird, Penny Starr Jr. and Michael Lucid of Pretty Thingsss. DJs My Little Pony and Spinny will rotate roaring vintage sounds too. The Stone Bar, 5221 Hollywood Blvd., Hlywd.; Sat., March 15. 10 p.m.-2 a.m.; over 21; $8 with wig/$10 without. (323) 466-6061, www.thestonebar.com.
