Guetta Grip

David Guetta at Giant; Laurent Garnier at Avaland anniversary bash

Lina Lecaro

Published on November 15, 2007

House anthems bursting with triumphant vocals and accessible yet aggressive beats never fail to make dance floors brim, and when it comes to the megafloors of Ibiza, Spain, David Guetta reigns, at least according to the global clubbing community. He recently won the title of top house DJ in DJ Magazine’s Top 100 Reader’s Poll, and his popular “Fuck Me I’m Famous” (great club name) even won “Night of the Year” at the Ibiza DJ Awards. But accolades aside, it’s his seductive style that stands out. His latest, Pop Life, is aptly named, with highlights like the moving mover “Love Is Gone” and a pulsating take on PIL’s “This Is Not a Love Song,” that beg for flashing lights and sweaty bods. Bet your booty there’ll be plenty of both at Giant.

Also noteworthy this week, Avaland’s four-year anniversary bash with French pioneer Laurent Garnier on the same night. A seminal figure in the late ’80s Manchester scene and beyond, Garnier’s grab-bag mixes throb with Detroit techno, Euro-disco, Chicago house and, of course, late 80’s U.K. acid and rock melds. Hardcore dance music heads may want to jump ’n’ thump between the two clubs (only blocks away from each other), as well as inside them. Sat., Nov. 17: Giant, at Vanguard, 6021 Hollywood Blvd., Hlywd.; 9:30 p.m.-4 a.m.; over 21. (323) 464-7373. Avaland, at Avalon, 1735 Vine St., Hlywd.; 10 p.m.-7 a.m.; over 21. (323) 462-8900.
